Three bottles, three prices, three lifespans, and one question that fills our inbox: which one do I buy? Ceramic coating shopping turns into a spreadsheet fast, and most of the spreadsheet does not matter. What matters is how long you keep the car, how much time you want to spend, and how much you want to spend.

UNO has its own write up in UNO ceramic coating explained. It is our 1 year entry coating and the easiest install in the line, so start there if this is your first coating. This guide covers the next two steps up, DOS and TRÉ, and how to pick between them.

DOS vs TRÉ at a glance

Both are single layer coatings that go on with the same process, the same pad, and the same wipe down. The difference is what you get once the coating cures and how you get there.

1. UNO: the 1 year entry coatingThe easiest install in the line, built for entry level use. If you want to learn the process on a daily driver and see what a coating does, this is the bottle. The full breakdown is in UNO ceramic coating explained.
2. DOS: 2 years or more for people who like the work9H hardness, intense water beading and sheeting, and a thick single layer. The slower flash time gives you room to work a panel without racing the product. DOS is for aficionados and detailers who want a coating that lasts longer and enjoy putting it on.
3. TRÉ: 3 years or more for the long haulSingle layer Nano Composite Technology with chemical and scratch resistance and a super slick hydrophobic finish. It is the pick for the car you plan to keep, and it comes with ease of maintenance.
4. The towel: your leveling stepWhichever bottle you pick, the process finishes the same way. Level the section with The Leveler, then make a final wipe with a VersaTowel.

How long are you keeping the car?

This is the first filter, and it settles more decisions than any spec. Leasing for two years or selling next summer? UNO covers a year and DOS covers two or more. Paying for 3 years or more of protection on a car that leaves your driveway before then does not make much sense.

Keeping it for the long haul changes the math. A coating is labor. You decon, you maybe polish, and you spend an afternoon on your knees with a pad. TRÉ is made to last 3 years or more, so you do that afternoon once and then go wash the car. Over a long ownership, the bottle that lasts longest gets you the most out of that afternoon.

How much time and skill do you have?

UNO is the easiest install, which makes it a forgiving place to start. DOS has a slower flash time, and that helps when you are working a whole hood on a warm day and want time to level it. That is also why detailers and aficionados like it. TRÉ goes on as a single layer with the same directions as the others.

If you have never coated a car, UNO teaches you the process cheaply. If you have done it once or twice and want more life out of the same effort, DOS or TRÉ is your next step.

How does the car live?

Think about what the paint sees every week. A daily driver with road film, bug splatter, and regular washes asks plenty of a coating. That is where TRÉ makes its case, with chemical and scratch resistance and a super slick hydrophobic surface that makes maintenance simple.

If you love watching water leave the paint, DOS delivers intense beading and sheeting, plus 9H hardness in a thick single layer. Whichever you pick, wash with Ceramic Snow and let the coating do its job.

What does each one cost?

UNO runs $49.99 for 50mL. DOS is $79.99 for 50mL and $119.99 for 100mL. TRÉ is $119.99 for 50mL and $199.99 for 100mL. Every bottle comes in a metal package with an applicator pad, so you are not hunting for one.

Budget is a real factor and it is fine to let it decide. DOS sits in the middle on both price and lifespan, so if you are torn between the other two, it is the natural place to land.

How to apply DOS or TRÉ

The directions are identical for both. Prep decides the result, so do not rush it.

1. Decontaminate. Wash the car, then use a Clay Mitt and Fuego to pull off bonded contamination. Cleanse is our prep shampoo for the wash step.

2. Polish if needed. A coating locks in what sits under it, so correct any paint you want to fix first.

3. Prep the panel. A pass with Wipe panel prep spray gets the surface ready before the coating goes on.

4. Load the pad. Put 10 to 15 drops on the applicator pad.

5. Apply. Work in overlapping straight passes over a 2 foot by 2 foot section.

6. Wait for it to sweat. Watch the section until it sweats or beads. That is your cue.

7. Level. Wipe the section with The Leveler, then make a final wipe with a VersaTowel.

8. Let it cure. Curing takes 12 to 24 hours, and the car has to stay dry the whole time. Hold off on washing for 7 to 14 days.

After that, maintenance is a regular wash with Ceramic Snow. SLIQ is our silica spray if you want something in the spray bottle for between washes.
