AWX: The Acid Wheel Cleaner for Neglected, Brake Dust Caked Wheels
Winter does ugly things to wheels. Brake dust bakes on, road grime stacks up, and by the time you finally face them, the barrels look like they were dipped in cocoa powder. A regular wheel cleaner takes a swing at that and goes home tired.
AWX is our acid wheel cleaner for the wheels that have won so far. It is a gallon of concentrate you can dial up or down depending on how bad things are, and it clings to the wheel long enough to actually do the work.
This guide covers what AWX is, when you need an acid and when a pH balanced cleaner like Fuego is the smarter pick, where it goes on the wheel, how to use it safely, and the questions people ask before they buy it.
What AWX acid wheel cleaner is
AWX pairs powerful acid ingredients with a proprietary high adhesion surfactant system. The surfactants make it cling to the wheel surface instead of sheeting off right away. That extra contact time lets the acid work at lower overall exposure on heavy brake dust, metallic contamination, and embedded organic grime.
The same surfactant package encapsulates the contamination it loosens, which gives you a cleaner, easier rinse and a lot less leftover residue than a traditional wheel acid. AWX also has a reduced acid odor, achieved through modern chemical balancing with no masking fragrance. You will notice the difference the first time you pop the cap.
Acid or pH balanced: which one does your wheel need?
Most wheels never need an acid. A pH balanced cleaner handles regular brake dust and is the right tool for routine washing. That is exactly what Fuego is. It is pH neutral, it foams and clings, and it turns purple as it breaks down iron particles. For a weekly or biweekly wash, Fuego is the bottle you reach for.
AWX is for the jobs Fuego has already had a fair shot at. Think of the truck that sat through a salty, grimy winter, or the set with a crust that laughs at a normal cleaner.
A simple way to decide. Spray Fuego first, give it its dwell, agitate, and rinse. If the wheel still looks dull or gritty, you have your answer. Step up to AWX, and go back to Fuego as the everyday bottle once the wheels are clean again.
Acid asks more of you. It is stronger chemistry, so the habits matter: cool wheels, a short controlled dwell, a thorough rinse, and gloves and eye protection. Your wheel maker's care guidance matters too, especially if your wheels are polished, anodized, chrome, or otherwise uncoated. Check it before you commit, and test a small area first.

How to use AWX: pick the strength, then work in small batches
Start with cool wheels. Park in the shade and let the brakes cool off. AWX should only go on cool wheel surfaces. Hot or warm wheels are off the table.
Suit up. Put on gloves and eye protection, and follow standard acid handling practice.
Pick the strength. Heavy cleaning is full strength, medium is 1:1, and light or maintenance cleaning is 3:1. If you are guessing, start weaker than you think you need. A second pass is easy, and undoing a first pass is not.
Rinse, then apply. A quick rinse knocks off the loose stuff. Spray AWX onto one wheel at a time. Do not stack four wheels and wander off. Acid should never dry on the surface, so work one wheel, finish it, then move on.
Dwell and agitate. Give it a short, controlled dwell and agitate with a soft wheel brush. The cling does the heavy lifting here, so you will see the grime break loose without much scrubbing.
Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the wheel, the barrel, the lug holes, and the tire edge. Then look the wheel over in good light. If a stubborn patch remains, run a second round at the same or a slightly stronger ratio.
AWX and the rest of your wheel routine
Treat AWX as the reset button. After a reset, a normal wash cycle keeps the wheels from sliding back to that state. Use Fuego for regular wheel cleaning and iron removal, and TRX for tires and wheel wells.
If you want both of those in one box, the Wheel and Tire Cleaning Kit pairs Fuego with TRX. Once the tires are clean, Infinite Shine finishes the tires, wheel wells, and suspension.
Then wash the paint with Foam Wash or, on a coated car, Ceramic Snow.
AWX questions, answered
What is the best acid wheel cleaner for heavy brake dust?
AWX is built for heavy brake dust, metallic contamination, and embedded organic grime. Use it at full strength for heavy cleaning, 1:1 for medium cleaning, and 3:1 for light maintenance cleaning.
How do you dilute AWX acid wheel cleaner?
Heavy cleaning is full strength. Medium cleaning is 1:1. Light or maintenance cleaning is 3:1. The ratios are printed on the bottle label, so check it when you mix.
Can I use AWX on hot wheels?
No. AWX is for cool wheel surfaces only. Do not apply it to hot or warm wheels.
What is the difference between an acid wheel cleaner and a pH balanced wheel cleaner?
A pH balanced cleaner like Fuego handles routine brake dust and is the right pick for regular washes. An acid cleaner like AWX is for heavy buildup that a milder cleaner will not move.
Does AWX smell like a typical acid wheel cleaner?
It has a reduced acid odor, achieved through modern chemical balancing with no masking fragrance. You should still wear gloves and eye protection and follow standard acid handling practice.
Is AWX safe on every wheel finish?
Test a small area first and check your wheel maker's care guidance, especially on polished, anodized, chrome, or uncoated wheels. Never let it dry on the surface, and rinse thoroughly.
How do I clean heavily neglected wheels in winter?
Start on cool wheels with a rinse, apply AWX to one wheel at a time at the strength the buildup calls for, agitate with a soft brush, and rinse completely. Follow up with Fuego and TRX for regular upkeep.
